ujeok (Talismans)

Paper talismans inscribed with Giun patterns that store elemental effects, made and maintained by the Inscribers and drawing on Korean folk talisman practice.

What they are

Bujeok (부적) are talismans inscribed with Giun patterns. Each pattern stores an elemental effect so the Giun theory Wizards study can be carried into the field without a Wizard present. The Inscribers, the shared subpath of the Suhodan joining Wizard and Hunter, are named for the Bujeok they inscribe and maintain. The craft draws directly from Korean folk talisman practice and is treated as an honored craft.

What they do

City wards. The Inscribers provide most of the protections around Seonhwa that keep Maggi from entering.

Seals. Their talismans seal caves and the crypt, holding the corrupted creatures within from spilling out.

Gwimak wards. Under a standing arrangement with the Danja, the Inscribers keep the outer walls of the Gwimak (귀막) covered with Bujeok. These ward against the uncontrolled spiritual activity that builds up where the dead are worked with in one place, and they are replaced on a regular cycle. The arrangement gives the Inscribers a working relationship with the Necromancers.

Field uses. Bujeok make elemental capability portable. Recorded examples are frost-triggered trap circles, arrows that carry a lightning charge, and ward-stones that create defensive perimeters around a camp. Because of this, the Inscribers are valued on long-range expeditions where bringing a full Wizard is not practical but elemental capability is still needed.

Who makes them

The Inscribers, working from a studio near the Hunter training grounds. They combine the Wizard’s elemental Giun theory with the Hunter’s practical knowledge of terrain, traps, and fieldcraft. The Wizard establishment has ongoing friction with them and considers the approach crude; the Hunters give them a practical respect and consider it useful.
