The Suhodan path of Cheolbyeok (철벽), whose work is to endure and hold the line so that everyone behind them survives.

Patron and purpose

The Guardian follows Cheolbyeok (철벽), the Iron Wall, the Celestial Spirit of Protection and Endurance. The path is built around standing firm: enduring what comes and holding the line against Maggi corruption and the threats that press on Seonhwa. Players who choose this path begin as Suhodan recruits training in and around Seonhwa, like recruits of every path.

The Guardian’s creed names the duty plainly: “The shield does not choose what it protects.”

Leadership

First Shield Beom-Seok (범석) heads the Guardians. A veteran who has watched many recruits die, he holds that anyone exposed to heavy Maggi must be exiled or executed before they turn, and he regards Maggi-corrupted creatures as pure evil. He was idealistic once; the need to protect has hardened him into the meaning of his name. He is often found in the council chambers rather than the room set aside for the Guardian leader, always working toward a safer future. He sits on the Council of Seonhwa, the council of the five paths, each leader carrying their own motive.

Training

Vanguard Dae-Hyun (대현) is the Guardian tutor, a younger, fiercely intense lieutenant in heavy armor. He idolizes Beom-Seok and tries to emulate the First Shield’s cold, unyielding nature. Despite that, he fits the role of tutor well, encouraging new Guardians and offering tips on their shield stance when he has the time.

Like all recruits, a new Guardian receives a final lesson on the world and what they have trained for, then is sent into the rat area of the Crypts to kill the respawning mini-boss Bae-Gumeong (배구멍). The relic fragment recovered there sets the player on the path that eventually leads to Gloth (formerly Han-Gyeol).

Shared subpaths

The Guardian borders two paths in the Circle of Balance, and a shared tradition has grown at each border.

  • Songhondan (송혼단), “Song” (Guardian and Cleric). The Song recover the fallen from Maggi-rich areas and perform funeral rites that keep the dead from rising as something worse. Their rites are elaborate, precise dances that channel Cleric purification through physical movement, drawing on the Guardian tradition of discipline and form. Beom-Seok values their practical necessity but is uneasy with how close their work brings them to the dead, which leaves them closer in philosophy to High Cleric Eun-Ae’s compassion-first approach even though half their training is Guardian.
  • Hwarang (화랑), “Hwa” (Monk and Guardian). The Hwa combine the Monk’s internal Giun cultivation with the Guardian’s martial duty and physical discipline, tempered by an appreciation for beauty (calligraphy, poetry, music, philosophy). They handle the human side of Seonhwa’s troubles, including internal discipline within the Suhodan’s ranks. That enforcement role brings them near to blows with the Guardians more than once. They understand Beom-Seok’s devotion to duty but would argue that duty without culture becomes hollow.

Transcendence

At the limit of mortal growth, a Guardian who would carry the burden of the Celestial Spirits takes in a shard of a broken pillar, gaining a direct connection to Cheolbyeok and becoming an avatar of the spirit. The first shard is il-san (일산); taking in further shards (ee-san and beyond) brings more power, but attempting it before the body is ready is deadly. The shard removes the limits of mortality along with its peace: death loses its grip, and the Guardian gives up what made them human for a task that never ends. Not everyone in Seonhwa sees this in a positive light, since it is not far from what the Cheonmugwan attempted. See Transcendence (Beyond Level 99).
