A Danja calls on a spirit they have helped, and that spirit appears to fight beside them, then leaves freely when the work is done.

What It Is

Yeongso is the most visible thing a Danja does. A Danja who has helped a spirit resolve their Han, or even partially eased their suffering, can call on that spirit in times of need. The spirit appears, fights alongside the Danja, and leaves when the work is done or when they choose to.

These are not pets. They are not summons in the way a Wizard conjures elemental force. They are people who show up because of the bond shared with the Danja. The spirits who answer do not come because they owe a debt. They come because they know the Danja who sat with their grief and helped them let go.

Living Skills

What the spirit can do depends on who they were in life. A soldier fights. A scholar provides insight. A hunter tracks. Spirits retain the skills and knowledge they carried in life. Their strength is shaped by how much Giun they hold and how coherent they remain. A spirit helped recently, whose Han was fresh, is stronger and more present. One who has been at peace for a long time may be fainter, the connection to the mortal world thinning as they settle into whatever comes after.

The spirit leaves on its own terms. When the fighting ends, or when the spirit chooses, it departs again, freely. This is the same pattern Mu-Yeong recorded with the first spirit she called, a soldier who fought beside her patrol and then left once the fight was over.

Building a Circle

A new Danja might have one or two spirits willing to answer. A veteran maintains relationships with many and learns which ones to call for which situations. Mediator Yun-Seo has dozens.

This part of the practice cannot be taught in a courtyard. It comes from fieldwork, from performing Gut after Gut, from building a circle of the dead who trust you. A Danja who cannot perform a proper Gut cannot call spirits at all. The records the Danja keep track which spirits have been helped and may answer a Yeongso calling, and they do not share that outside the subpath.
