aster Tracker Yoo-ri

Head of the Hunter path on the Council of Seonhwa, an outsider who treats the Maggi-corrupted as a rotted limb to be excised for the sake of the world’s balance.

Character

Yoo-ri is as cold as her name implies, and she is considered an outsider to the council both figuratively and literally. When she is found around the Manor, it is usually outside, by a tree or on the outskirts. She refuses to stay in a room or be contained in any way.

She leads the Hunters, the path patroned by Cheongan (천안), the Sky Eye spirit of precision and the wild. As Head Hunter she holds one of the five seats on the Council of Seonhwa, which is a council of the five paths rather than a single ruler, and each leader carries their own motive.

What she believes

Where the other leaders frame the corrupted in terms of evil, mercy, knowledge, or strength, Yoo-ri sees the Maggi-corrupted as a rotted limb or a parasite. It is something to be removed and excised so the greater whole of the world can be saved. Her tasks are rarely shaped by the needs of people. They follow the greater balance of the world instead.

Despite seeming harsh, she holds the work of putting down corrupted creatures to be a sacred task given to Hunters, a way to put these creatures out of their misery. This sits within the world’s larger understanding of Maggi (막기): killing the corrupted is a mercy, since the fully corrupted are never permitted to move on and are turned into tools of the corrupting force. Most Hunters lived in nature, and they follow the path through a desire to restore it. The aim Yoo-ri gives that work is a “Good Death.”

Relationships

She respects the field knowledge of the Seon (선), the Hunter and Monk shared subpath whose practitioners commune with the Sansin (산신). Like Grandmaster Tae-Sung, who respects the Seon for their discipline, she does not fully understand where the Seon go for the weeks they spend in the wilderness.
