sitgim (씻김, “Washing”)
The Danja cleansing rite. In the field it strips Maggi from a target; against the undead it dissolves the bonds that hold them in a hostile state.
Field cleansing
A Danja can perform a quick, focused Ssitgim on a corrupted creature or an ally.
- On an enemy. It strips the Maggi from them, weakening their corruption-fueled strength and sometimes breaking their aggression entirely.
- On an ally. When someone has taken Maggi exposure, Ssitgim cleans the corruption before it can take hold.
This field form is faster and rougher than a full ritual. It still works.
Against undead
The restless dead are held together by Han (한) and Maggi in varying proportions. A well-targeted Ssitgim attacks both at once, dissolving the bonds that keep the spirit trapped in its hostile state. This is why it is devastating here: it goes after the grief anchoring the spirit and the corruption warping it in the same stroke. Lesser undead fall apart. Stronger ones weaken enough for conventional fighters to finish them.
Within the Gut
Ssitgim is also the rite of last resort inside a Gut (굿). When a spirit’s Han cannot be resolved, the Danja performs Ssitgim to ease its pain. This does not free the spirit, but it keeps it from deteriorating into something dangerous.
The Ssitgim-gut
The full Ssitgim-gut is the larger ceremonial form of the same cleansing. In the Gloth arc, players defeat Gloth (once Han-Gyeol) but cannot end him, because he reforms from the Maggi. They gather components for a ritual designed by Eun-Ae to purify the corrupted pillar fragment and, with it, Gloth himself. Completing the Ssitgim-gut restores Han-Gyeol. The field Ssitgim is the compressed combat version of this ceremony.
